Mr. Tkayoshi SAIBAOwner/ Buildre
The shop and workshop is located in Owarisahi, a suburb of Nagoya city.
Takayoshi Saiba and Asahi Deguchi are the president and staff of Dobbat's Rhino House, and both are frame builders.
Saiba, the representative, discovered the fascination of bicycles when he was in junior high school, and after graduating from high school he went to work for Fukaya Sangyo (now Fukaya Co., Ltd.) in Nagoya, Japan.
He was fascinated by the functional beauty of European road racers imported by Fukaya Sangyo, such as Cinelli and Colnago.
While participating cycling race, he aspired to become a frame builder.
In 1980, he joined Toyo Frame (Osaka), where he produced MTB frames for many American brands such as Ritchie, Rocky Mountain and Mountain Goat, and was impressed by the free-spiritedness of American bicycles with a short history.
He then abandoned the conventional value system of "bicycles equal Europe" and aimed to produce bicycles for Japanese people using his own sensibility, which was not a copy of Europe, and which had not existed in Japan until now.
He learnt to make frames by Tig welding, which was still rare at the time.
He also gained experience in frame production at GT Bicycles (USA).
After returning to Japan, he set up Dobbat's Saiba Manufacturer in 1987 and started making frames in the corner of his house.
Instead of using lugs, which were often used in the production of steel frames at the time, he started fillet brazing, which requires a lot of manual work and is time-consuming, and established a beautiful and unique production style that is unmatched by any other company. Fillet brazing allows a greater degree of freedom in the thickness and angle of the pipe, which in turn allows for a wider range of design possibilities and makes it easier to realise the user's preferred riding characteristics.
In 1998, he felt that "without contact with users, builders would be isolated informationally", which led him to set up his current shop and workshop.
Today, except for Wednesdays, he works in his workshop until 14:00 and opens the shop from 14:00. Although he has less time to make frames than he did when he had his own workshop, he says that he still values the time he has to spend talking with customers who come to place orders.
Mr.Akira Deguchi joined Dobatz in 2006 after graduatation from university in which he was in a cycling club of the university, and has been making Dobbat's bicycles under Saiba ever since.
Saiba who will be 65 in 2023, calls Deguchi as his "good partner for many years", and he has been nominated as Saiba's successor. When the time is right, Deguchi will create a new Dobbat's with new sensibilities and ideas while utilising the fillet blazing that is the true essence of Dobbat's.
